Heather Handley

Associate Professor Heather Handley is a volcanologist and geochemist and leads the Volcanic and Magmatic Research Group (VMRG) in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

Heather’s research interests include:

  1. The integration of field volcanology and volcano geochemistry,

  2. Magma genesis (petrological, mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic perspectives)

  3. The timescales of magmatic processes and ascent using uranium-series isotopes and elemental diffusion in volcanic minerals,

  4. Perceptions of volcanic hazards and risk

  5. Indigenous knowledge of preliterate volcanic events

  6. Behaviour of uranium-series isotopes during weathering and erosion and the uranium-series constraints on the formation age of sediments,

  7. Geochemical investigations into contaminated land and water.
